A.I | Automation | Society

Will the rapid development of AI lead to the emergence of new social, economic and political structures, or will it rather bring long gone structures back to life?

Last weekend we had a great discussion on the interaction between Automation & Artificial Intelligence (AI) and our socio-economic-political environment.

It’s never easy to look into the future and predict what changes the new technological developments will bring to our current world. Yet, compared to past social changes in human history, this time it may be even more challenging due to the speed with which the revolution is approaching.

Automation & AI have already begun transforming our socio-economic-political environment on the macro level by decreasing our reliance on humans both in the economy and in the military. The influence of automation has also reached the micro level – i.e. our daily lives. As we watched movie clips from the ROME TV series, we couldn’t help noticing similarities in the social patterns created by slavery back in the ancient times and those brought on by the emergent AI and automation today…

Borrowing from Aristotle, we discussed ‘what if’ scenarios based on the changing balance of the sources of social and political power. Will the new structures favor Tyranny, Oligarchy or Democracy? Will Automation & AI lead to a new age of feudalism, or will we see the emergence of new types of slavery?

Karen: I feel threatened about AI. But my friends are happy with it. They think AI makes people’s life easier and they are not afraid of losing their jobs…However, if this has to happen, between strong and weak AI, I prefer the latter.

Endre: I think very few people are aware of the seriousness of the changes that are sure to come in our lifetime.

Doreena: The question is, whose life will AIs make easier?

Ailsa: AI is developing very fast and a lot people will lose their jobs. At the same time, governments should create new jobs to help their people. New classes will form.

Zach: Are bureaucracies a form of AI?

Ailsa: There is demand for a strong AI on the market. We can’t stop its development...Historically, land owners never lose their jobs. Buy more houses...

Anna: We need to make sure that AI remains purely a tool...
